Well-attended walk-in meeting Nieuwe Diep – Nieuwe Werk

Participants view a model of Den Helder during the "Nieuwe Diep Nieuwe Werk" open house

The Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk project focuses on improving the accessibility of both the civil and naval ports. The current Nieuwe Diep – Nieuwe Werk route is outdated and in need of renewal, so that it is ready for the further growth of the port. With the project, the municipality is investigating how the infrastructure can best be adapted to better distribute traffic and improve accessibility.

Preliminary Design Presentation

During the meeting, the initial conceptual design was presented, and several speakers addressed the audience. After the presentations, visitors had the opportunity to share their ideas, concerns, and wishes with the project team. The atmosphere was open and engaging; many attendees actively contributed their thoughts on the future layout of the area. Visitors appreciate being able to contribute their ideas at such an early conceptual stage, while nothing has been decided yet.

Key Points to Consider for the Future

The evening was viewed as positive and constructive. Visitors recognize the need for the changes and show understanding for the complexity of the project.

The main points of attention were:

  • Clarity about parking and traffic structure (one-way or two-way traffic).
  • Effects on buildings, especially monumental buildings.
  • Accessibility of companies during implementation.
  • Refinement of cycling and walking routes.
  • Transparent communication about planning, phasing and decision-making.

All responses will be carefully considered when drawing up the final draft design, which is expected in early 2026.
