Introduction
Rijkswaterstaat is preparing to renovate and replace the ferry terminals in Den Helder and Texel. This is necessary to ensure that the connection to Texel remains safe and runs smoothly.

At the same time, the Maritime Cluster is exploring how this necessary replacement in Den Helder can be leveraged to develop the area around the ferry terminal in a way that is both attractive and future-proof. Options being considered include a new layout for the access area and the possibility of filling in part of the harbor basin. This would create additional space for improved accessibility, parking facilities, new business activity, and a more attractive environment.
The partnership between Rijkswaterstaat and the Maritime Cluster thus offers an opportunity not only to renovate the ferry terminal but also to improve the entire area—from its layout to traffic flow on busy days.

Insight into what it yields
We are investigating whether part of the harbor basin at the ferry port can be filled in. This will allow the space in the area to be used more intelligently and attractively, with attention to both good accessibility and an attractive environment. Possible revenues are:
