Developments at the Buitenveld Site: Where Do We Stand Now?

An area of Buitenveld that is still vacant, where the new military base will be built.

Buitenveld is a site adjacent to Willemsoord and forms part of Den Helder’s historic cityscape. The Ministry of Defense plans to develop this into a modern living and working environment for Royal Netherlands Navy personnel. The site will feature barracks, offices, and amenities such as sports and recreational facilities. This will create a safe and attractive place to live and work.

The renewal of the ferry ports in Den Helder and Texel is getting closer. Rijkswaterstaat, TESO, the municipality of Den Helder, the municipality of Texel, the province of Noord-Holland, and the Ministry of Defence have agreed to jointly develop the draft designs further.

The municipal council has established the Spatial Framework Buitenveld. This document contains urban planning preconditions and forms the basis for the further development of the area.

Sounding board group launched

One of the ways residents can contribute ideas is through the sounding board group Gebied Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk (New Deep/New Work Area). This group consists of fifteen representatives from the area.

The Province of Noord-Holland, the municipality of Den Helder, and the Ministry of Defence are jointly taking a new step in the development of Maritime Airfield De Kooy and Den Helder Airport. On November 14, 2025, State Secretary Gijs Tuinman, Deputy Esther Rommel, and Alderman Fotigui Camara (see photo) signed a letter of intent in which they agreed to reach a broad cooperation agreement in 2026.
